When I visited Nepal in early 2018 to do the Everest Base Camp trek I had planned to bring a full set of good quality trekking gear- everything that I could see myself needing at the high altitude and allowing for poor weather conditions.
My plans were frustrated when the airline did not manage to get my bags to Kathmandu at the same time as me. I was left for two days without them.
Knowing what I know now I would not have bothered to get kit ahead of time. The Thamel district is chock-full of places to get good quality gear at great prices - even if you want authentic top brands they also have outlets there where you can shop in air-conditioned comfort.
If you're not too fussy there are heaps of second hand stores and shops selling knock-off items for very competitive prices. If you bring Dollars (USD, AUD, NZD), Pounds Sterling, or Euro you will find these go a very long way.
Even further up the trail, you can find places to buy gear at Lukla and Namche.
My bag were eventually reunited with me at Namche, but if something similar happened to me again, I would be pretty relaxed, because there's lots on offer in Nepal.
